Saül (Partie I)
Coucou,
As promised, today I will take you to visit French Guyana and more specifically Saul ...
Saül is located in the heart of the Amazonian forest about 180 km in the south of Cayenne. Originally linked to the coastline by many villages of gold diggers that no longer exist, Saul is now completely isolated in the heart of the forest ; it can be reached only by plane and the nearest town, Maripasoula, is 100 kilometers far from the west.
Archaeological remains testify to an early Amerindian presence in the area. The recent history of Saul begins with the arrival of people from the Antilles and mainly from Saint Lucia, during the second gold rush that reached the region at the end of the nineteenth century. Saül was granted municipal status in 1969.
The population consist of Creoles, Metropolitans, Hmongs and Brazilians. The village currently has about 70 inhabitants.
Saul is the only village in French Guiana that is not located on the banks of a river. You can go on foot or with an all-terrain vehicule (ATV) as a quad bike. There are about 100 kilometers of paths lead the forest around the village. More than 60 kilometers of trails have been laid out by the National Forestry Commission for 1 to 2 day walks. So, I will make you discover the French Guiana forest in this post.
During our weekend, we had the opportunity to do three hikes ... One on the Belvedere Trail, then we took the Mont La fumée trail and finally we ended our trip with a hike on the Big Trees trail.
First of all, the Belvedere trail provides a breathtaking view of the Saül Valley and the Galbao Mountains. Perched on an observatory on a rock, the typical Creole houses of Saul and their flowery gardens can be seen to the east.
The Mont la Fumée trail has a beautiful highland forest, made up of high trees.
Finally, the Big Trees Trail of is alternated by marshy areas and a forest of firm earth. In the course of the trail, one passes in front of a gigantic “Sablier” , a tree of 3 meters in diameter which is the biggest specimen of this species counted in French Guyana. The sap of this tree which is toxic and caustic, was once used as a poison of war by the Amerindians. According to them, this tree houses spirits of Amerindians and is called Bwadyab in Creole that is to say “ the tree of evil spirits”.
As you can see the vegetation is relatively varied. Next time, I will show you the village of Saul. So, see you soon ....
